Lumpkin, Ga. - Sue M. Moye died October 24, 2015 at Joe-Anne Burgin Nursing Home in Cuthbert, GA. She was 97 years old.
Visitation will be held at the home of Mac and Georgia Moye (6130 US Hwy 27, Lumpkin) on Monday evening, October 26, 2015, from 5:00 - 7:00 PM. The funeral will be Tuesday, October 27, 2015, at Cuthbert Presbyterian Church at 11:00 AM, followed by a burial at the family cemetery near Sue's beloved home.
Mrs. Moye was born Sue McLendon in Jacksonville, Florida, where she spent her youth. She graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon, Georgia in 1940 and attended a graduate program in English at the University of Florida. A school teacher, she met Navy Commander L. M. ("Red") Moye, Jr. of Cuthbert, who had served as second-in-command aboard the LCI-10 throughout the Atlantic Theater of World War II. The couple married February 16, 1945.
The couple finished out the war at New Orleans and Mobile and then moved to Indianapolis, where their first son, Andrew, was born in 1946. Two years later, they moved to a home near Lumpkin which had been in Red's family since 1853. That home, built in 1836, has been the family's locus ever since. A second son, Matthew, was born in 1953.
Sue's distinguished her life by her uncompromising commitment to local historical causes. These included her roles in founding the Stewart County Historical Commission and Historic Westville. She edited and/or co-authored several books now regarded as early regional classics in rural preservation, including The Bedingfield Inn Cookbook; Inventory of Early Decorative Arts of Stewart County, Georgia; and Pot Liquor, a collection of oral histories about Stewart County. She served on various key committees for Westville for four decades. Sue and Red, along with the Singer Family of Lumpkin, donated the Singer-Moye Indian Mounds to the Columbus Museum, a property now in the care of the University of Georgia.
Sue supported many other youth-oriented causes as well. She was a Cub Scout den mother for many years and served for over four decades on the Stewart County Library Board. An avid tennis player, she and Red built their own tennis court and mentored many local teens in playing a sport which at the time was rare in rural Georgia.
Sue remained a devoted member of the Cuthbert Presbyterian Church, attending the service on the last Sunday of her life.
The youngest of the six children of Tom and Ida Garrett McLendon, Sue survived them all. She also survived her husband, Red, with whom she enjoyed 44 years of marriage. She leaves behind her son, Andy (Pam); and her son, Mac (Georgia), and their children, Bobbye, Annie (Craig), Matthew G., and Laura.
