Nellie Stapleton Alston died at her home near Weston, GA., on Thursday, March 6, 2014.
A Visitation Service was held at Baldwin Funeral Home, 50 Charles Overby Dr., in Richland, GA, on Friday evening, March 7, 2014, from 6:00 – 7:30 PM. Funeral Services were held at Macedonia Baptist Church, Saturday, March 8, 2014, at 11:00 AM, with the Reverends Robert Orr and Wallace Willis officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. "Mrs. Nellie" was 102 years old.
Mrs. Alston was born January 23, 1912, to the late Mattie Fletcher Clark Stapleton and Charles LaFayette Stapleton in Webster County, Georgia. She attended school in Centerpoint and Weston, graduating from Weston High School. She later attended GSCW at Milledgeville, Georgia, where she received her degree. She married Paul West Alston in 1933. The marriage ended in divorce in 1936.
Mrs. Alston taught school for five years, and then began working at the Webster County Welfare Department (known today as the Department of Family and Children Services.) She retired as director after twenty five years of service.
Mrs. Alston had been active member of Macedonia Baptist Church, the Senior Adult Sunday School Class and WMU, The National China Painters Guild, and the Weston Woman's Club.
She was preceded in death by both of her parents, all of her siblings and their spouses. They were Emmett Brewer and Rosa Pearce Stapleton, Robert Lawson and Georgia Adams Stapleton, Mary Frank Stapleton Fussell and W. O. (Bill) Fussell, Albert Clark and Mildred Dennard Stapleton, Owen Jackson and Gussie Jones Stapleton, Charlie Will Stapleton, Mattie Stapleton Fussell and Stanley Fussell, Carmie Stapleton Tucker and W. E. (Bill) Tucker, Chloris Stapleton Davis and Gaston Davis, and her twin, Ellie Stapleton Jones and Ross Jones, Jr.; also, a grandson-in-law, Alan Doil Adams, and several nieces and nephews.
Mrs. Alston is survived by her son and daughter-in-law, Gordon Baker and Ellen Wiseman Alston, of Weston, GA., two grandchildren, Leslye Alston Adams Cook and Noel Cook of Albany, GA., and Gordon Baker, Jr. and Sandy Sutherland Alston, of Weston, GA.; five great-grandchildren, Kyle Stapleton Adams and Laine Bradley Adams, Thomas Steele Adams, Alston Jarrod (AJ) Adams, Kaitlyn Marie Alston and Lyndsey Ellen Alston and several special friends and companions, Rubie Clark, MaryElla Hawkins, Rosie Hall and Mary Dell Houston.
Pallbearers were great nephews: Keith Dacus, Paul Stapleton, Jerry Jones, Robert Hearon, Stan Fussell, Phillip Jones, Caleb Jackson, Fussell Hughes, Jake Everett.
