Gunnels
September 2, 1929 – October 26, 2021
Mildred Elizabeth Woodall Gunnels, 92, longtime resident of Richland, entered into eternal rest on October 26, 2021. She was born on September 2, 1929, in Taylor County, Georgia, to the late William Hinton Woodall and Berta Lee Cromer Woodall.
Mildred is survived by her brother, William Robert Woodall (Carol), sister-in-law, Ruby Gunnels, three brothers-in-law, John Phillips, Guy Gunnels and Edward Bowers and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
Mrs. Gunnels is preceded in death by both of her parents, her beloved husband, Jesse Gilbert Gunnels and three sisters, Erma Rustin, Betty Jean Phillips and Shirley Kirksey.
Mildred was a kind and gentle soul, full of life, laughter and joy, an active and involved member of her community and church. She dearly loved the little of Richland, her church, (Richland First Baptist) many friends, and especially her family members. After her health failures that necessitated moving to the Sumter Retirement Village in Plains, she made many friends there and was loved and appreciated by all.
For many years, she owned and operated two businesses, Richland 5 & 10 Cent Store and Richland Flower & Gift Shop. She was an active member of the Richland Garden Club and the Lioness Club serving as President for three terms. She directed many weddings and coordinated numerous 50 th Wedding Anniversary Celebrations. She served several years as Chairman of the March of Dimes of Stewart County. She was an active member of the Business Women's Breakfast Club of Albany.
Mildred was a faithful servant of her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. She was a devoted member of her beloved church, Richland First Baptist Church and served in many capacities over the years, President of the of WMU, sang in the Golden Chords Choir, was Principal of the Vacation Bible School, taught the Marie Miller Sunday School Class and served on the Church Hostess Committee.
Mildred and Gilbert were never the parents of children but were loved deeply by nieces, nephews and children of their community. They were devoted to each other and loved traveling, making many trips across the US and abroad.
Funeral Service will be held at the Richland First Baptist Church on Saturday, October 30, 2021, at 11:00 AM, with Dr. Robert Woodall and Reverend Justin Frederick officiating. Interment will be in Harmony Cemetery in Richland.
The family requests that memorial contributions, in addition to flowers, to be made to the Richland First Baptist Church.
