Obituary

Mary Williams Butts (Judy), 89, of Lumpkin, Georgia, passed away on Monday morning, March 28, 2022,  at Phoebe Sumter Hospital in Americus, Georgia.

Graveside funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m., Tuesday, March 29, 2022, in Northside Cemetery, in Lumpkin, Georgia.  The Reverends' Jimmy Duke and Dan Smith will officiate the service.

Ms. Butts was born May 11, 1932, in Athens, Georgia (Whitehall Community) to the late Henry Grady Williams and Omie Alice Campbell Williams. Judy lived in Lumpkin from 1958 to 1990, then moving to Lake Harding and secondly to Columbus, Georgia. Judy moved back to Lumpkin, Georgia in 2017 after the passing of her husband, Leon E Butts, Jr. (Sonny).

Judy attended the Joseph M. Hodgson Academy Grammar School in the Whitehall Community, Gaines School, Athens Middle School and Normal Town (Athens) High School on Prince Avenue in Athens, Georgia.   She attended Andrew College in Cuthbert, Georgia, majoring in Business.   Judy also attended Georgia Southwestern College in Americus Georgia, majoring in History. Judy attended Emergency Medical School at the Medical Center in Columbus, Georgia.

Judy was a certified Emergency Medical Technician and served as the Director of the Stewart County Emergency Medical Service. During this time she was also self-employed with Business and Real-estate interest. She was the original owner of the Kissing 99.3 Radio Station which began in Lumpkin Georgia and it is still in operation in Columbus Georgia under new ownership.

Judy was a member of the Lumpkin United Methodist Church, Stewart County Historical Commission and Historic Columbus. She was an active member and volunteer of the Anne Elizabeth Shepherd Home for Girls in Columbus, Georgia. Judy loved traveling with and taking tours with members of Historic Columbus. She loved working with flowers and decorating for many socials while in Lumpkin during her early years. Judy has been an active volunteer/member of these various organizations for over 60 years.  She has enjoyed her rocking chair front porch in these later years.

Survivors include her two sons, Keith Williams Butts, Lumpkin, Georgia and Randall Carter (Rachel) Butts of Lumpkin, Georgia; one daughter, Lisa Rebecca Butts (Bobby) Wright of Hamilton, Georgia; two granddaughters, Amanda Brooks Butts (David) Young, Rebecca Feagin Butts (Captain) Fort; two grandsons, William Patrick (Hannah) Callaway, Hollis Boynton (Catherine) Callaway; six great grandchildren, Grady James Young, Mary Carter Fort, Amelia Campbell Fort, Tomlinson Morton Fort,  Allen Carter Callaway Lucas Doyle Callaway; and her beloved cat, Sparkles.

Judy is preceded in death by her parents, husband, Leon E. (Sonny) Butts, Jr.; three brothers, Carl Robert Williams, Henry Pierce Williams, Grady Hulan Williams; and two grandsons, Randall Carter Butts, Jr., Kenneth Hodges Callaway, Jr.
