Jack Stanley Abell, 82, of Charlotte, NC died on September 14, 2013 at Hunterwoods Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. He was born on November 28, 1930 in Richland, GA and was the son of the late Susie Bartlett Abell and Clifford Stanley Abell. He was baptized in the Richland Baptist Church.
He moved to Columbus, GA in 1943 and began a lifelong love of sports. As a 1954 graduate of Wofford College in Spartanburg, SC., he was a four sport letterman, excelling in golf, track, basketball and football. In 1952 he had 57 catches as an end, surpassing the major college record at that time of 52. He still holds Wofford's record for the most receptions in a game with 10 and his record of 57 receptions in a season still stands.
Mr. Abell was a veteran of the Korean War, where he served as 1st Lieutenant in the United States Army. He also played on the football team at Ft. Bragg. In 1985 Mr. Abell was elected to the Wofford College Athletic Hall of Fame.
He has lived most of his life in Charlotte, where he had many friends and a long successful career in textile chemical sales. Mr. Abell also loved to dance and was a member of the Charlotte Shag Club.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Bobbie Walker.
Mr. Abell is survived by his children, Dawn Hagin, Cindy Abell, Stan Abell and Chris Abell, his wife, Michelle; grandchildren, Nicholas Hagin and Zachary Abell; a brother William Clifford Abell; and former wife, Dianne Abell.
The Memorial Service was held at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 22, 2013 in the chapel of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Service, 1111 East Blvd., Charlotte, NC 28203. The family received friends Sunday at the funeral home from 12 noon until the service. He was laid to rest next to his mother in Harmony Cemetery in Richland, GA on October 5, 2013.
Memorials can be made to the Jack Abell Fund, Wofford College Development Office, 429 North Church St., Spartanburg, SC 29303.
Arrangements were in the care of Hankins & Whittington Funeral Home with the Baldwin Funeral Home in Richland, GA assisting with the burial of Mr. Abell's remains.
