Obituary

Hewlette Rhodell Dunn, Jr, was born January 25, 1935, in Shiloh, Ga., to the late Hewlette Rhodell Dunn and the late Thelma Anderson Dunn.

As a young boy, the family relocated to Red Hill community in Stewart County, Georgia. Rhodell attended grade school in Richland and graduated from Richland High School in 1953. He attended Emory University and Mercer University.

In March, 1954, Rhodell married his high school sweetheart, Susan Mitchiner Sims, and they made their home on the family farm at Red Hill. They were blessed with five daughters. Rhodell served on the Board of Deacons and as Sunday School Superintendent at the First Baptist Church of Richland. Later in life, he was a member of Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, Dawson, and Trinity Episcopal Church, Columbus.

Beginning at an early age, Rhodell farmed alongside his father, grandfather and uncles. He served with the United States Postal Service for over 40 years, serving first as Postmaster in Richland, and retiring in Fortson, Ga.

Rhodell was an avid hunter and fisherman throughout his life. He was a proud charter member of the Lake Gussie Fishing Club.

Rhodell was preceded in death by his parents, his first wife of 52 years, Susan Mitchiner Sims Dunn, and his second wife of 8 years, Martha Jones Dunn.

He is survived by his five daughters, Laura Calhoun Dunn Lynch, Phenix City, AL, Nan Taylor Dunn Bankston, Baconton, GA, Elizabeth Owen Dunn McGrane (Michael A.), Acworth, GA, Kathleen Bridges Dunn Higley (Richard C.), Chagrin Falls, OH, and Feagin Fitzgerald Dunn Bickerstaff (W. Boon), Columbus, GA.

He is also survived by eighteen grandchildren, Sallie Sibley Fort Minick (Daniel R.), Floyd Perkins Fort, Jr. (Rebecca), Rhodell Dunn Fort (Mary), Maggie Anderson Bankston Boyer (M. Lance), Michael LaDon Bankston, Jr. (Erin), William Jackson Bankston, Susan Dunn Bankston, Amy Jo McGrane Davies, Michael Curtis McGrane, Thomas Slade Kemp, III, Michael Alan McGrane, Jr., Mary McFadden McGrane, Marion Sims Blalock, Robert Lewis Blalock, III, Richard Palmer Higley, Lucille Boyd Bickerstaff, Kathleen Ada Bridges Bickerstaff and William Boon Bickerstaff, Jr.

He is also survived by eleven great grandchildren, Daniel Ross Minick, Jr., Laura Morgan Minick, Mary Carter Fort, Amelia Campbell Fort, Tomlinson Morton Fort, Davison Samuel Fort, Michael Lance Boyer, Jr., Anderson Bankston Boyer, Richard Owen Boyer, Ashley Davies and Sarah Davies.

Rhodell is also survived by his sister, Vivian Dunn Whitley, sister-in-law Betty Sims Patterson, brother-in-laws Joseph Marlin Whitley, Robert Eli Patterson, Jr., Robert Monroe Bunker and numerous beloved nieces, nephews and cousins.

The family has great appreciation and love for our angel, Shirley Chancellor, who has provided endless blessings of nurturing care and love for our father.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to Holy Spirit Episcopal Church, P. O. Box 645, Dawson, Georgia, 39842.

Visitation with family and friends will be held on Thursday, January 25, 2018, 4:00-7:00 pm, at the home on Nicholson Street, Richland, Ga.

A service will be held on Friday, January 26, 2018, at 11:00 am, at Richland United Methodist Church, with burial at Harmony Cemetery.
