Sergeant First Class (U. S. Army Retired) Eugene Barnum Cobb, 83, of Richland passed away Wednesday, April 4 at Stewart-Webster Hospital in Richland after a brief illness. Sergeant Cobb was born December 18, 1928 in Stewart County and was the son of Barnum Henry and Emma Jane Rice Cobb, both of whom preceded him in death.
A 1946 graduate of Webster County High School, he entered the workplace, then enlisted in the United States Army in 1948 retiring after 20 years honorable service on January 1, 1969. Medals and awards included the Army Commendation Medal; Good Conduct Medal and Clasp Silver one Loop Conduct; Army of Occupation Medal and Germany Clasp; National Defense Service Medal and Bronze Star Attachment Single; Expert Badge and Carbine Bar; Sharpshooter Badge and Rifle Bar; Sharpshooter Badge and Carbine Bar; and Marksman Badge and Rifle Bar. He was employed by H. L. Moore Company in Richland for some forty years where he received much recognition for his witty, yet always ready to help in any way demeanor. In additon to his parents, Sgt. Cobb was preceded in death by a sister, Audrey Cobb Peavy, of Lakeland, Florida and a brother M/Sergeant John Henry Cobb (U. S. Army Retired). He was a member of the Antioch Baptist Church, the American legion Post #128 and the Georgia Sheirff's Youth Ranch. Survivors include his wife of 56+ years, Rena Slocumb Cobb, of Richland; a daughter, Janice Cobb Smith (Jeff); three sons, Nevel "Bubba" (Debbie) Cobb, of Richland; Patrick (Renee) Cobb, of Ellaville; and Glynn (Kelly) Cobb, of Richland and eight grandchildren, Jonathan and Michael Smith, of Albany; Anthony, Will and Beth Cobb, of Richland; Brent Cobb, of Nashville, TN.; Alecia Cobb, of Ellaville, and Kyle Cobb, of Americus. Visitation will be held from 3-5 P. M. Friday, April 6 at Antioch Baptist Church in Webster County with services following in the church cemetery at 5:00 P. M. Pallbearers will be grandsons and H. L. Moore II. Honorary pallbearers will be members of Antioch Baptist Church, H. L. Moore, Jr., and George Moore, all of Richland. Flowers will be welcomed along with donations to the: American Legion Post #128, Antioch Baptist Church and the Georgia Sheriff's Youth Ranch.Baldwin Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
