Erskine Lyon Cherry, 74, died on September 21, 2016 at the Midtown Medical Center in Columbus, Georgia.
Erskine was born on September 23, 1941 in Stewart County Georgia. His parents were the late, Hollis Cherry and Carmen Lyon Cherry.
During Erskine's lifetime, he served as a Sheriff's Office radio operator/dispatcher. He held this position for at least 29 years. He felt it was his duty to serve the citizens of Stewart County and those passing through the county to the best of his ability. Erskine attended elementary and high school in Lumpkin.
He is survived by his niece, Ina Cherry Grace of Jacksonville, Alabama; two brothers, John Guy Cherry of Oxford, Alabama and Dexter Cherry of Richland, Georgia; his sister-in-law, Ila Cherry of Glencoe, Alabama; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A Graveside Service will be held on Sunday, September 25, 2016, at 2:00 PM at Shady Grove Baptist Cemetery on the Providence Canyon Road, west of Lumpkin, Georgia. The Reverend Jack Ray will conduct the service.
The family will receive friends on Sunday, September 25, 2016, from 1:00 to 1:45 pm, at Shady Grove Baptist Church immediately before the service.
The Honorary Pallbearers are the officers and staff of the Stewart County Sheriff's Office.
