Ennis Alzada Dunn Walter, 95, died on December 22, 2017, at Kindred Hospice in Columbus, Georgia. She was born on July 11, 1922, in Chipley (Pine Mountain Valley), Harris County, Georgia, to the late James Willie Dunn and Nannie Lou Taylor Dunn.
Ennis is preceded in death by both of her parents, her husband, Ian Walter; two sons, Jerry Anthony Walter, William "Billy" Walter; and three brothers Rupert Cyril Dunn, Hewlett Rhodell Dunn, Sr., James Maynard Dunn;
She is survived by one grandson, Ian Christian Walter; one granddaughter, Lacy Dye; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Ennis' family moved to Chipley, Georgia in 1934 and she was baptized at the First Baptist Church in Chipley. Ennis graduated from Chipley High School, Pine Mountain Valley in 1939. She served as the President of the Class. She attended West Georgia College in Carrollton, Georgia and Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Georgia. She was a member of the following: American Dental Association, Retired Officers Association Auxiliary, Mr. & Mrs. Club, Inc., Lutheran Church of the Redeemer Church, (member for over 52 years) in Columbus, Georgia, Cordele Dance Club, Richland Garden Club, Founding President of Columbus Alzheimer's Association, Stewart-Webster Red Cross, National American Hygienist Association, ADRDA.
Ennis' family moved to Stewart County in 1939. She and Ian were married on September 9, 1945, at the Richland Baptist Church. They adopted two little boys, Jerry and Billy. She worked as a registered dental assistant and then became a hygienist. She was the first hygienist to go into the Muscogee County schools to clean children's teeth and apply fluoride treatments. She was next employed at Fort Benning to work in the school system as a hygienist and other clinics until 1973 when she received a disability retirement.
During the early years of Ennis and Ian's marriage they attended both Richland Baptist Church and the Lutheran Redeemer Church. In 1950 she took confirmation and joined the Lutheran Redeemer Church. Later in her life, Ennis lost her eyesight after a fall and then following a surgery. She could see to get around but could not read.
A Visitation Service Church Service will be held Wednesday, December 27, 2017, at 10:00 AM, at the Lutheran Church of the Redeemer, 4700 Armour Road, Columbus, Georgia, 31904, with the Church Service following at 11:00 AM.
Burial will be at 1:00 PM, at Harmony Cemetery in Richland, Georgia, December 27, 2017, at 1:00 PM.
