Obituary

Elizabeth Allison Magwood Lee, 89, died on Thursday, December 27, 2012, at Vista Care in Columbus, GA.

Allison was born August 16, 1923 in Charleston, SC and enjoyed a happy childhood in Mount Pleasant, across the Cooper River from Charleston.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Annaleize Meggett Magwood, a brother, Robert Magwood, her husband, George Lee, Sr, and son, George Lee, Jr.

She is survived by a brother, John Magwood of Mt. Pleasant, SC and many nieces and nephews.

She was a member of the Omaha Baptist Church, where she served as clerk and treasurer for many years, working tirelessly to maintain the historic church in good condition for the benefit of future generations.

Always having a public spirited awareness, she served as an Omaha council member, and was instrumental in the development of the Omaha Water System.

Over the years Allison participated in dedications for the Water System, a new Post Office, the bridge over the Chattahoochee River, and the Centennial Anniversary for the Omaha Baptist Church and town of Omaha.

Allison was an active volunteer in the early days of Westville and the Bedingfield Inn.  She was a part in the creation of a Stewart County book, from Westville, "Pot Liquor", by writing and submitting an article about Omaha and the family.  Allison made a donation of a 100 year old, or more, gentleman's dress suit to the Kirbo Center, Florence Marina; as well as a mural; and two large illustrations depicting early colonial life.

With a life-long love of the arts, Allison was proficient in painting.  Her talent was used in pictures given as gifts to those when recipients found them pleasing.  Her hours spent in the studio was never for monetary gain.  The joy of the work was ever satisfying – especially in the retirement years- after a career of 26 years as Postmaster (1952-1963) in the Omaha Post Office.  At age 80 Mrs. Lee produced illustrations for the publishing of her father's book; about the life of a boy on an island off the coast of South Carolina.

Allison met her husband, George, while living in Miami, Florida; and after their marriage spent most of their years together in Omaha, where she remained through her final days.  She will lie beside her husband and son in the Fitzgerald Family Cemetery, Omaha, Georgia.  The Graveside Service was held on Saturday, December 29, 2012, at 11:00 AM, with the Reverend Wesley Price officiating.  Her nephews served as pallbearers.   A Visitation with family and friends was held on Friday evening, December 28th, from 6:00 – 8:00 PM, at Baldwin Funeral Home.

Treasured words from her family were "She was truly a lady."
