Eleanor Chapman Shannon, 96, of Preston, Georgia, passed away on March 9, 2022, at Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia.  She was born on October 7, 1925, in Thomas County, Georgia, to the late David S. Chapman and Sarah Kelly Chapman.

Eleanor is preceded in death by both of her parents and her husband, Clifton Wayne Shannon.

She is survived by her two daughters, Sharon (Larry) Williams of Plains, Georgia and Susan Hampson of Leesburg, Georgia; six grandchildren, Kevin Hampson, Kip (Molly) Hampson, Kyle (Whitney) Hampson, Kelly Williams (Jeff) Kight, Nick (Kelly) Williams, Dusty (Jilliann) Williams; ten great grandchildren; two nieces and one nephew.

Eleanor graduated from Georgia Southwestern College in Americus, Georgia, with a teaching degree.  She, her sister and brother-in-law moved to Preston, Georgia, where he served as a minister.  After coming to Preston, Eleanor met Wayne Shannon and they were married on December 29, 1946.  At Wayne's death, they had been married for 71 years.

Eleanor taught in the Webster County School System.  After the birth of their daughters, she retired from teaching.  During Jimmy Carter's term as Governor, Eleanor worked as his secretary for eight years, in his Plains office.  When her daughters were older, she worked as the secretary for the Georgia State Parole Board in Preston.

Eleanor had a great passion for reading books.  She was also an extremely talented seamstress.  She made the girl's clothing, including Susan's white nursing uniforms and many of the other nurses borrowed her uniforms.  She also made Sharon's wedding gown.

The family will receive friends at Sharon's home in Plains, Georgia.

A Church Service will be held on Sunday, March 13, 2022, at 2:00 PM, at Preston Baptist Church in Preston, Georgia, with burial at  Preston City Cemetery.  The Reverends' Raymond Smith and Buck Kinney will officiate the service. Julie Page will play the piano for the service.  Pallbearers serving are:  Kevin Michael Hampson, Kip Shannon Hampson, Kyle Wayne Hampson, Nicholas Tripp Williams, Dustin Lowery Williams, Jeff Kight, Landon Tripp Kight.

In Lieu of Flowers:  Donations may be made in Eleanor's memory to the Preston Baptist Church and Phoebe Sumter Hospice.
