A Memorial Service and Celebration of Life will be held on Thursday morning, 11:00 AM, September 13, 2018, at Weston Baptist Church. The family will procession to the church, led by the Webster County Sheriff's Office, with Keith Turner leading on the famous "John Deere" tractor. George Prather Williams will sing, "I'll Fly Away", with Lewis Baldwin reading the poem, "They Buried A Farmer Today". Friends and family are invited to attend the Memorial Service and stay for lunch which will be in the church social hall.
Edward was the firstborn son of Bernard Jesse and Pearle Ammons Goodwin, who preceded him in death. He grew up in the home where he was born on August 5, 1938 and never strayed far from there. He accepted Christ at an early age and was a member of Weston Baptist Church his entire life. At one time, he was active in the RA's, Brotherhood and on the Finance Committee of the Church.
Edward attended school in Webster County and graduated from Webster County High School in 1956. He enrolled at Norman College for a short period of time but the lure of the land brought him back to Webster County. He engaged in farming with his father and when his brother returned to the farm, Goodwin Brothers Farm was created.
He and his brother, Raymond, became one of the cornerstones when Webster Farmers Inc. was created in December 1972. It began as a small co-op for buying and selling chemicals. But through the years has grown to include a hardware store, chemicals and fertilizer as well as handling thousands of tons of peanuts in the fall.
Edward loved tractors of any kind or size, as long as they were John Deere. He had a fair size collection of toy tractors that were kept in a glass cabinet. Grandchildren and great-grandchildren were to only point and drool. Edward spent many hours in the company of his best friend, Dick Merritt, as they traveled to numerous antique tractor and engine shows. Edward and Judy were charter members of the SOWEGA Big Wheelers Antique Tractor Club.
Edward met the love of his life, a cute little brown eyed girl, Judy Wright, of Benevolence, Georgia, and they were married on July 31, 1963. At this time of his death, they had been married 55 years. They
built their home near Weston, Georgia, on the land that Edward loved. Here they raised their family and lived a full, productive life.
Edward and Judy enjoyed western style square dancing and danced for 25 plus years. They also enjoyed getting in their car and traveling with no destination.
As his physical health failed, there came a need to transfer part of the legacy of the land to a younger generation who could carry on the work. But at a time when he should have been able to enjoy retirement, a thief known as Alzheimer's, came to reside in the Goodwin home, stealing husband, father, grandfather and friend. All immediate family became dedicated caregivers as the disease destroyed his mind. And his wife, who he sent to nursing school, became his primary caregiver.
So as we say good-bye, Edward leaves to cherish his memory and honor his legacy, his loving wife of 55 years, Judy; four daughters, Cindy Spencer, Priscilla Goodwin, Edwina (Keith) Turner, and Ginny (Tony) McLeod. Eight grandchildren: James Harris, Marc (Candice) Harris, Frank (Danielle) Harris, Paul Turner, Carrie Turner, AJ Turner, Jesse McLeod and Jamie Morgan McLeod. Three great -grandchildren: Connor Burk, Stryker Red Harris and Dayton Davis; one brother, Raymond (Myrna) Goodwin and several nieces and nephews as well as a host of cousin.
As the fog rises from the freshly plowed dirt in the early mornings, we are reminded that you are gone but not forgotten. Your legacy and love of the land live on.
