Doris Hammons Powell, 89, of Columbus, Georgia, formally of Omaha, Georgia, died on May 17, 2016, at Columbus Hospice in Columbus, Georgia. She was born on April 20, 1927, in Jonesboro, Georgia, to the late Marion F. Hammons and Jimmie Lou Sirmans Hammons.

Doris was retired from Ft. Benning, where she worked at Martin Army Community Hospital, in the Records Management and Public Affairs Departments. The Powell's lived in Omaha, Georgia back during the early years of their marriage. After Doris' retirement from Civil Service, she worked and retired as a Library Assistant for Muscogee County School District.

Doris is preceded in death by both of her parents; her husband, Thomas L. Powell, Sr. of 50 years; her son, Thomas L. Powell, Jr.; two brothers, Charles Hammons, Harvey Hammons; and one sister, Betty Lou Fussell.

She is survived by her son, Dale Powell and his wife, Liz Powell, of Columbus, Georgia; four grandchildren, Stacey Anderson of Midland, Georgia, Shelly Guthery and her husband Deon Guthery of Ellerslie, Georgia, Karla Powell Vega, Scott Powell; and 10 great grandchildren.

A Graveside Service will be held on Friday, May 20, 2016, at 11:00 AM, at Parkhill Cemetery in Columbus, Georgia. The Reverend Jim Morgan will conduct the service. A Visitation with family and friends will be held after the service.
