Clifton Wayne Shannon, 91, died on February 11, 2018, at Sumter Retirement Village in Plains, Georgia. He was born in St. Leo, Pascoe County, Florida, on January 1, 1927, to the late Samuel Clifton Shannon and Martha F. Bell Lowery Shannon.

Wayne returned home from World War II as a United States Naval Veteran, Third Class Yeoman Petty Officer. He was self-employed with his brother and stepfather, Frank Lowell until 1963, when Wayne became the Preston Postmaster. After his retirement from the post office, he would spend more time with his family. He was in the Georgia League of National League of Postmasters for three years.

Wayne and Eleanor Chapman Shannon were married for 71 years. Wayne loved his church, country, family, community and especially the Preston route people. Over the years of his serving as Post Master, the people had all become friends. He served his church, Preston Baptist Church for many years as a Deacon. He was an extremely loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather and a loyal friend.

He is survived by his loving wife of 71 years, Eleanor; his two daughters, Sharon Shannon (Larry) Williams of Plains, Georgia, Susan Shannon (Mark) Hampson of Leesburg, Georgia; six grandchildren, Kevin Hampson, Kip (Molly) Hampson, Kyle (Whitney) Hampson, Kelly William (Jeff) Kight, Nick (Kelly) Williams, Dusty (Jilliann) Williams; nine great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and numerous friends. He will be missed by all who loved and knew him.

He is preceded in death by his mother, his father, S. C. Shannon, his step-father, Frank R. Lowery, his beloved brother, Rodney Shannon and his very special aunt, Aunt Edna.

The family wishes to express their thanks to the Phoebe Sumter Hospice in Americus, Georgia, the staff of Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus, Georgia and the Sumter Retirement Village in Plains, Georgia, for their care of Mr. Wayne and the love shown to their family.

The family visitation will be held on Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at 1:00 – 1:30 PM, at the Preston Baptist Church Fellowship Hall, Preston, Georgia.

A Church Service will be held on Wednesday, February 14, 2018, at 2:00 PM, at Preston Baptist Church, with burial at the Preston City Cemetery in Preston, Georgia. The Reverend Raymond Smith will officiate the service, and music by Julie Page.
