Billy
Sidney Wilson, 90, passed away peacefully at Hospice House in Savannah, Georgia, on Thursday, February 24, 2022. He was born on August 16, 1931, in Leesburg, Florida, to the late Mildred Shierling Wilson and Sidney Dawson Wilson.
When he was a small child, his family moved to his mother's home county in Richland, Georgia. Billy was a star basketball player at Richland High School and played for Troy State Teachers College (now Troy University) in Troy, Alabama. It was there he met his future wife, Marianne Langley.
Billy served in the United States Navy and served his country during the Korean War.
Billy coached basketball and taught high school in Lumpkin, Pitts, and Rochelle, Georgia. He then went to Leslie, Georgia, where he was principal and basketball coach. Later, he moved to Clayton County, Georgia, where he was a school principal for many years.
After retirement, Billy served as Headmaster and coach for Greenfield Academy in Weston, Georgia. After this retirement, he resided in Mexico Beach, Florida, where he enjoyed fishing almost daily. Then after living in Montgomery, Alabama, for a number of years he finally relocated to a retirement community in Savannah to be closer his son and his family.
Survivors include his wife, Marianne, and his son, Billy (Betty) Wilson, Jr. of Savannah, granddaughters, Mary Wilson (Jacob) Powell, of Savannah and Sarah Wilson of Statesboro, and his precious great-granddaughters, Lily and Langley Powell of Savannah.
A Chapel Service will be held Monday, February 28, 2022, at 2:00 pm at Baldwin Funeral Home in Richland, Georgia.
A Visitation will be from 1:00 pm until 1:45 pm at the funeral home, before the service.
