Betty Martha Fort Shierling's Obituary
"Betty" Martha Fort Shierling, 86, died on November 9, 2014, at the Four County Health and Rehab Center in Richland, Georgia. She was born on February 4, 1928 in Lumpkin, Georgia, to the late Samuel Sibley Fort, Jr and Bessie Mae Dudley Fort. She was the widow of Lee Anderson Shierling.
Betty was preceded in death by both of her parents and her husband, Lee Anderson Shierling. Betty was a graduate of the Business School in Columbus, Georgia.
Betty was retired from Champion Paper Company where she worked as the secretary for 35 years. She served as Director of Farmers State Bank since 1967. Betty was a life member of the Lumpkin Baptist Church and a life-long residence of Lumpkin and Stewart County. Betty was selected a Gracious Lady of Georgia, an organization that was started by Rozell Fair Fabiani, in 1996. She was a member of the NSDAR, George Walton Chapter, in Columbus, Georgia.
Betty had a love of helping people. She was always the first person to volunteer to take someone to a doctor's office, hospital or any other place they needed to go. When it came to a wedding, Betty was there to cut the cake! She must have held the record for cutting the most wedding cakes!! If you were around Betty for very long, you knew she would keep everyone entertained with her stories of the past.
Betty was a loyal to the charities that she believed in, through her active support, when she was able, and also through her monetary support.
A Visitation Service with family will be held at Lumpkin Baptist Church Fellowship Hall on Thursday morning, November 13, 2014, at 10:00 AM. The Graveside Service will be held Thursday , November 13, 2014, at 11:00 AM, at Northside Cemetery in Lumpkin, Georgia.

Honorary Pallbearers: Gary Blackburn, Charles Lee, Richard Merritt, Dianne Bennett
